• phonemes The Phonemes (CD, £6.25)

    label: Blocks Recording Club

The Phonemes are a small band focused on issues of vast historical guilt, language acquisition and various animals. Based around the songwriting of Magali, perhaps best known until now for being the ex-rhythm guitarist/drummer in the incredibly famous The Hidden Cameras, the band also contains Consumption Records' head honcho Matias and Liz of Jonasson. The Phonemesí music is gentle and clever, their singing is great too. Recorded by Efrim Menuck (A Silver Mt. Zion, Godspeed You! Black Emperor) at thee mighty hotel2tango (Arcade Fire, Vic Chesnutt) the album features ubiquitous wunderkind Final Fantasy. Bandmates and friends Matias Rozenberg (Matias, Consumption Records) and Liz Forsberg (Jonasson) say farewell to the Phonemes on this record but not without laying down some of their signature bass, drum and harmonic sounds. Magaliís musical career has seen her recording and playing guitar and drums in the Hidden Cameras, backing up American indie music icon Daniel Johnston on drums, touring across Canada with Bob Wiseman and Kids In the Hall's Scott Thompson and collaborating with a host of musical projects from off-kilter 60ís-girl-pop-inspired outfit HANK to playing assorted found objects and singing in John Tielliís Metal Kites.
