• trappist afterland Like a Beehive, the Hill Was Alive (LP, £21.95)

Formed in 2010, Trappist Afterland (Band) is the psychedelic folk project fuelled by the religious ruminations of songwriter and multi instrumentalist Adam Cole (oud, guitar, lute, tanpura, bodhran, vocals), who's joined by Phil Coyle (tabla, frame drum, vocals), Nicholas Albanis (bell, citern, hammered dulcimer, bowed psaltery) and Lachie Henderson (acoustic guitar). Although the influence of folk music from various sectors around the world can be heard (the British folk revival, '70s acid folk, gamelan music, Middle Eastern music, Indian raga), the band maintains a unique and almost otherworldly quality. With lyrical explorations delving into Gnosticism, Christian mysticism and other esoteric themes, Trappist Afterland still manages to keep its music firmly grounded in the present, yet revealing a timeless quality.
