• anton barbeau Heaven Is In Your Mind (4-track coloured vinyl 7", £5.95)

    label: Fruits de Mer Records

According to his website, Anton Barbeau plays “pre-apocalyptic psychedelic pop”; he was born in Sacremento, now lives in Berlin and has recorded about 20 albums in the last 20-odd years, with the likes of XTC, The Bevis Frond and The Soft Boys; The Sunday Times described his latest album ‘Sister Act’ as, “many consumers’ album of the year, if only they got to hear it”. Ant has recorded many a track over the years for Fruits de Mer and now he’s back with a cracking vinyl-only 7” EP. It’s called ‘Heaven Is In Your Mind’, which is a bit of a giveaway that the title track is a cover of a song originally recorded by Traffic, matched on side one with a new Anton Barbeau original, ‘Secretion Of The Wafer’ (hopefully a few of those ‘consumers’ will get to hear this). Side two opens with the absolute classic Big Star song, ‘September Gurls’ and ends with his own take on Bowie’s ‘Scary Monsters’. ...that makes a total of 16 minutes of loveliness crammed onto 7” of colour vinyl. Ant has one of the most distinctive voices in music today and has the knack of making any song his own, including the ones he hasn’t written, and leaving you with a smile on your face; his glass is always more than half-full – give the enclosed promo CD a listen and yours will be too. The 7” EP contains: 1.‘Heaven Is In Your Mind’ (originally by Traffic) 3:49 2.‘Secretion Of The Wafer’ (Anton Barbeau) 4:10 3.‘September Gurls’ (originally by Big Star) 2:53 4.‘Scary Monsters’ (originally by David Bowie) 5:15
