• sixteens Casio (CD, £11.50)

    label: Cochon Records

This record can’t be dismissed as another cheap imitation of 80’s style synth-pop. These goth kids devise some insatiably catchy hooks and vibrantly pulsating dark wave. Sixteens is Veuve Pauli, Nicolai Gancheff, and Kristen Louise, a.k.a. Louise Gas. If you’re a fan of Oakland favorites the Phantom Limbs, you might have heard Kristen Louise’s vocals featured on their debut album, Applied Ignorance, and their sophomore follow-up, Displacement. Apparently, the P-Limbs have taken quite a shine to Sixteens’ synthetically sadistic style. Not surprising since Skot B. (Phantom Limbs’ bassist) lent his talents to Casio and mixed the entire record!
